Making Secury's onboarding survive its own compliance

A regulated sign-up that took eleven days and four handoffs now finishes in under an hour, with the audit trail stronger than it was before.

How the project went

The challenge

Compliance as a series of dead ends

Secury's onboarding met every regulatory obligation it had, and lost roughly half of its qualified applicants doing so. Documents were uploaded to one system, reviewed in another, and returned by email — with an average of eleven days and four handoffs between an application and an answer.

The constraint was real and non-negotiable. What was negotiable was the assumption that a compliant process has to be an opaque one.

The approach

Show the applicant where they are

We rebuilt the flow around a single case object that both sides can see. The applicant gets a live status, the specific reason for any hold, and the ability to fix it in place; the reviewer gets a queue with everything already assembled rather than an inbox.

Nothing was removed from the checks themselves. Every verification step that ran before still runs, and each one now writes a structured, timestamped entry — so the trail an auditor reads is machine-generated rather than reconstructed from email.

Results

Faster, and easier to defend

Median time to decision fell from eleven days to fifty-one minutes, and completion among qualified applicants rose by 44%. The first external audit after launch closed with no findings, which is the outcome the compliance team cared about most.

  • The Secury onboarding review queue open on a compliance desk
  • An office district at night with lit floors
  • A board of identity verification cases in progress

The Good words

“We were told repeatedly that we had to choose between a fast onboarding and a defensible one. It turns out we had to choose between those and a badly built one.”
